Global ranking
Institutions are scored on nine weighted criteria. Global ranks are given once an institution has been assessed on all nine. Provisional scores are listed by country and ranked within their country on the By country tab, because different countries publish data for different criteria. Select a row to see its breakdown.
Rankings by country
The same scores, ranked within each country. Each country also has its own page: see all country rankings.
Online and distance-learning institutions
Universities and institutions that teach fully online, by distance learning, or in a blended format. They are assessed with the same nine criteria as campus institutions.
Veritrae recognition
Research Active 2026
The Veritrae Research Active seal recognises universities and institutes whose academics are publishing peer-reviewed research. It is awarded on evidence anyone can check, and it cannot be bought.
- 20+ peer-reviewed journal articles affiliated with the institution, published in 2025
- Counted in OpenAlex, the open index of the world’s research
- Reviewed every year. The 2027 seal will use 2026 publications
The seal recognises research activity. It is not accreditation. See the Research Active policy.
Display your seal
Institutions that hold the seal may show it on their website. Copy this code into any web page. The seal links to this list so visitors can confirm it.

Methodology
One set of mathematical rules applies to every institution. The weights below are a starting proposal and will be revised through independent expert review.
S is the overall score, wi the weight of criterion i, xi its normalised score (0–100), and n the number of criteria.

Integrity rules
- Rankings cannot be bought. Payment for any service has no effect on scores.
- Advertising is kept separate from assessment.
- No one, including administrators, sets a rank directly. Ranks come only from the formula.
- Every data correction and weight change is published in the changelog.
- Missing data is marked Insufficient Evidence and never estimated.
Full rules are in our policies.
Provisional scores
While a full assessment is under way, an institution with verified data on at least two criteria receives a provisional score: the weighted average of the criteria assessed so far. The number of criteria used is shown beside every provisional score. Provisional scores are ranked only within a country, where institutions have been assessed on the same criteria from the same official source.
